How common are car accidents in Texas oil fields?

On Behalf of | Jun 2, 2025 | Oilfield Accidents

Working in the oil and gas sector is a dangerous career choice. Oil and gas workers often receive above-average wages because of the risk associated with their jobs. Professionals often work in remote locations. They do their jobs in close proximity to dangerous chemicals and heavy machinery. There is also the possibility of a fire or explosion to consider.

Many oil and gas extraction sites are in rural areas, often far from infrastructure. In some cases, workers have to access work sites using two-track roads with no pavement. Even when there is a traditional street nearby, there may still be reason to worry about motor vehicle collisions. Despite all of the other risk factors that oil and gas workers face, car crashes are actually one of the top causes of injuries and fatalities.

How common are job site car wrecks?

As previously mentioned, the lack of infrastructure can increase collision risk. So can long shifts and high speed limits on rural roads. The possibility of a major crash makes accessing the job site or transporting materials or equipment dangerous job responsibilities.

According to an analysis of recent fatal collisions, car crashes are the second most common cause of oil and gas worker deaths in Texas. Between 2014 and 2019, there were 470 reported oil and gas worker deaths nationwide. Almost half of those deaths (219 fatalities) occurred here in Texas.

Vehicle crashes were the second leading cause of worker death. Data shows that 54 workers died due to accidental contact with objects at an extraction site, while 53 workers died in motor vehicle collisions.  Many others may have sustained serious injuries in crashes while working in the oil and gas sector.

Professionals hurt on the job may be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. The benefits available include medical coverage and disability benefits to replace lost wages. Grieving families who lose a loved one in a fatal crash may also have a right to file a workers’ compensation claim.

Identifying job hazards and responding appropriately after workplace incidents can help those in high-risk careers protect themselves and their families. Filing a workers’ compensation claim is often a smart move for those hurt in car crashes while on the clock.
